First timer. Although, i'd been hearing great things, I was hesitant to make the drive but when they had a pop up with Manny's Deli, I had to make the trip. I was glad I did. Free cupcake with every sandwich. I purchased 2 sandwiches, so that means too cupcakes.....Sweet.......I opted for the caramel and the rainbow sherbet. My son loves rainbow sherbet and the owner swore it tasted just like it. She was correct by the way. I also took 2 slices of caramel pound cake, a slice of caramel cheesecake and a slice of lemon cheesecake.....I had to share, so I got a variety. All were excellent and the caramel is the truth. These paired well with coffee or milk. Both owners were present and interacting with customers. Since this pop up was on a major thorughfair on the southside of Chicago during the lunch rush on a Friday, parking can be a challenge. Luckily, I arrive just before this. Parked just accross the street. The storefront is clearly marked, but it's easy to miss. The inside is small but, large enough to accommodate a small crowd picking up orders. I can easily see how a line could spill out onto the sidewalk because between people getting sandwiches, which was off to the side in the interior and the counter and display case immedately upon entry, this place was beginning to fill up fast. After my visit, I recently ordered more desserts to have them delivered at home via dwell social. I'm not a dessert person but this place has me re-thinking that.

I came in here two days ago. I needed to bring some cakes to a repast and thought of you guys! Soooo happy I did! I called first and asked if I could purchase a caramel cake to go. The nice lady on the phone said they had two layer and three layer caramel cakes that I didn't need a special order for. I could pick them up right away. I just couldn't get any special wording on them. Perfect!!! I was like 5 mins away. I came in and it was very busy for a Tuesday at 1:20ish pm. I love to see it! A younger gentleman ahead of me purchased like 4/5 cakes. The lady at the register had good customer service! I purchased a 2 layer caramel ($32ish) and a lemon ice box ($25)! I was told the lemon ice box pie was a specialty pie that they don't carry daily! Score!!!!!!! I was happy about that because I make lemon ice box pies from scratch and NEVER see them at bakeries. My total was $62ish. Everyone at the repast loved the caramel cake and lemon ice box pie. They thought I made them since I am a fellow baker! Amazing quality ingredients!! Stellar job Brown Sugar bakery!!!!!!!!!!! **sorry I forgot to take pictures but I will be back soon and will edit them in!!!

NOTE: the website says the place opens at 11, but it opens at 12!' On a chilly Sunday morning in the beginning of December, I came an hour early by accident, and the line was already forming from church goers and pastry enthusiasts. I got: the caramel, carrot cake, German chocolate cake, lemon cake, rainbow sherbet cupcake, red velvet cupcake, caramel cupcake, turtle cheesecake! Tip: This is not a place to do work. There is no seating. You come in, buy, and leave. That's it! This place is close to great savory spots like Lem's Bar-B-Q, which also doesn't have seating. Bring a car if you don't live nearby. The most popular cake is caramel! Vice-President Kamala Harris had the German Chocolate. https://civicengagement.uchicago.edu/news/small-business-spotlight-brown-sugar-bakery-hits-the-sweet-spot-between-homey-and-gourmet#

I was visiting my man in Chi Town and he took me to Brown Sugar Bakery and what a wonderful experience! The best butter cookies this Cali gurrl ever had! The cupcake was delicious too but when I visit in a few eeeks I'm definitely trying the Carmel cupcake. Great customer service and very helpful because there's so much many delicious pastries to make a decision- I wanted them all...lol. The owner was very sweet! The ambiance gave me that old school feel and sense of community that I grew up in Los Angeles - felt at home. Very immaculate. I'll be back in two weeks and looking forward the Carmel cupcake... Anyone visiting from out of state you have to treat yourself to some Brown Sugar. Happy Yelping!

Happen to be in this Chicago neighborhood on the same day that the owner annouces she is building a candy factory. In tribute, I stopped by and grabbed some treats. Owner Stephanie Hart has transformed her new manufacturing facility to expand Brown Sugar Bakery-Chicago it the ONLY Black woman-owned chocolate manufacturer in the US. Couldn't be happier to celebrate her recipe to success today and partake in some goodies. On this occasion, I stuck to cupcakes so we could try a few versions. Classic Carmel, Red Velvet and Chocolate/Carmel Cupcake. Hands down that carmel is fabulous. 5 out of 5 stars!!! I would rate the vanilla cake 4 out of 5. I felt the cake was drier than I would of expected but still good just not great. The red velvet cupcake was delicious and very moist. On my next visit will try the Obama cake. There was just too many options so I stuck to cupcakes. Next time will try the pies, bread pudding and slice of cake. This bakery is known for holiday orders so if you want one...order now. Every year that I have lived here they sell out.
